Coachella Fun Facts, Lineup, Set Times, Tips and more

The Coachella Valley Music And Arts Festival will be here before you know it. Tickets are sold out as usual, but there are still plenty of tickets available on TicketsNow, Ebay, VividSeats and other aftermarket ticketing sites. The lineup for 2015 looks amazing, so if you can make the trek, it will definitely be worth the trip.

If you are leaving from San Francisco and want to save a few bucks on your trip to the festival, check out the Coachella Party Bus (or maybe a Coachella Helicopter)!

Some Fun Facts about Coachella

  • The concept of a festival at the Empire Polo Club in Indio, CA can be traced back to a Pearl Jam concert that took place there in 1993 when the band was boycotting venues controlled by Ticketmaster. The success of the show validated the area as a place to hold a large festival and paved the way for the inaugural Coachella Music Festival six years later.
  • The Coachella Valley Music and Arts Festival began in 1999 as a 2-day event with some pretty big headliners including Rage Against The Machine, Tool, Beck, The Chemical Brothers, Morrissey, Perry Farrell, Ben Harper and more! Some notable acts listed in “small font” are A-Trak, Amon Tobin, Modest Mouse, A Perfect Circle and DJ Shadow. The event lost over $750,000 and had 17,000 people on Day 1 and 20,000 on Day 2.

  • A Perfect Circle was the first band to play at Coachella
  • Because of the major loss in Year 1, Coachella did not return for a second year in 2000. With the help of AEG, who acquired Goldenvoice (creators of Coachella), The festival returned in 2001 as a 1-day festival with Jane’s Addiction, Paul Oakenfold, The Roots, Chemical Brothers, Weezer and more on the bill.
  • In 2007, the organizers extended the festival to 3 days. In 2012, the festival was extended to 2 weekends with the same lineup.
  • The first year that Coachella sold out was 2004 with The Cure, Radiohead, The Pixies and The Flaming Lips at the top of the lineup.
  • Coachella is the most profitable music festival in the US. In 2014, the festival had an attendance of over 579,000 people and grossed $78.3 Million.
  • There have been a lot of notable performances and surprise acts along with a fair amount of unexpected issues over the years. One interesting situation occurred in 2008 when a giant, inflatable pig that was part of Roger Waters headlining set accidentally got loose and floated away. A couple of days later and a few miles away, the pig landed in a neighborhood. The people who found it were given $10,000 and 4 lifetime passes to the festival.
  • Perry Farrell is the only person who has performed at every Coachella (12 times)

Now it’s time to get ready for Coachella 2015! The three days of the festival feature artists from every genre of music from Hip Hop to Indie Rock to EDM, so it will be hard to find a time where there wasn’t at least one artist that you would like to see. Make sure to check out some new artists and different genres that you wouldn’t normally see. Music festivals are the best way to expand your taste in music and try something new…
